Steve Smith’s record-breaking century powers Australia on Day 2 of Third Test

Steve Smith silenced critics with a gritty comeback century on Day 2 of the third Test against India at the Gabba, moving to second on Australia’s all-time Test century list with his 33rd hundred.

Smith’s milestone, achieved in 88 fewer innings than Ricky Ponting, places him behind only the legendary Aussie with 41 centuries. After a rain-hit Day 1, Australia resumed at 0/28, but early wickets left the team struggling at 3/75.

Smith joined Travis Head at the crease, and the duo stabilized the innings, with Head smashing a blistering 152 off 160 balls while Smith anchored the innings with a patient hundred off 185 balls.

Smith’s knock not only passed Steve Waugh’s record but also placed him as the 11th-highest century-maker in Test history, with only England’s Joe Root (36) ahead among active players.

His understated celebration reflected both relief and determination as he raised his bat to the Gabba crowd. With Australia setting a strong foundation, Smith’s and Head’s contributions have put the team in a commanding position, showcasing the blend of resilience and aggression needed to dominate a crucial match in the series.
