Bundesliga match suspended after goalkeeper struck with projectile

Union Berlin’s Bundesliga match against Bochum was halted for nearly 30 minutes after visiting goalkeeper Patrick Drewes was hit by a thrown object, reportedly a cigarette lighter, in stoppage time.

Drewes, unable to continue after receiving medical attention, was replaced in goal by striker Philipp Hofmann as Bochum had used all their substitutions. Both teams agreed not to compete during the resumed play, passing the ball until the final whistle of the 1-1 draw. Drewes was taken to the hospital, and the person responsible for the incident was identified and handed over to the police.

Bochum, still winless after 14 games and nine points adrift of safety, protested the decision to resume the match, arguing it left them at a “sporting disadvantage” and demanded the game be forfeited in their favour.

Union Berlin condemned the individual responsible, emphasizing the importance of not blaming the entire club or fanbase. Despite the chaotic end, Bochum managed to secure only their third point of the season, while Union Berlin remains in 12th place on 17 points.
