Rangers stunned by Boyd-Munce’s late strike in St Mirren defeat

Rangers manager Philippe Clement expressed frustration after his team “threw away 45 minutes” and ultimately suffered a 2-1 defeat at St Mirren, leaving them 12 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.

A lackluster first half from Rangers saw Jack Butland concede a penalty, converted by Oisin Smyth, as Stephen Robinson’s aggressive St Mirren side dominated.

The second-half introduction of Nicolas Raskin and Danilo sparked improvement for the visitors, with Brazilian striker Danilo equalizing after being denied moments earlier. Despite their resurgence, Rangers failed to capitalize, and Caolan Boyd-Munce’s stunning 93rd-minute strike sealed the win for St Mirren.

Clement criticized his team’s first-half performance and acknowledged the setback for Rangers, who had been narrowing the gap to Celtic in recent weeks. St Mirren’s aggressive first-half display and resilience in the second period were key to their first top-flight victory over Rangers since 2011.

The home side responded to the equalizer with determination, with Robin Propper nearly scoring an own goal before Jonah Ayunga’s pressing set up Boyd-Munce’s dramatic winner. Robinson’s bold decision to field 17-year-olds Callum Penman and Evan Mooney, who assisted the goal, highlights St Mirren’s confidence as they eye fourth place in the league.
