Broncos star Ezra Mam faces nine-week ban for NRL Code of Conduct breach

Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam is reportedly facing a nine-week suspension following a breach notice issued by the NRL, alleging conduct that contravenes the league’s Code of Conduct.

The 21-year-old, who signed a five-year, $4 million contract earlier this year, pleaded guilty last week to driving with a relevant drug in his blood and driving without a license after a head-on crash in Brisbane on October 18.

The incident injured a woman and a child, with Mam failing roadside and subsequent drug tests. He was fined $850 and had his license disqualified for six months, though no conviction was recorded.

The NRL has yet to finalize the penalty, as Mam is afforded the opportunity to respond to the breach notice.

In court, the magistrate labeled Mam’s actions “stupid,” emphasizing the dangers of driving under the influence of illicit substances. Mam later expressed remorse, apologizing to those involved in the crash and pledging to learn from the incident.

“This isn’t a reflection of what I want to be and what is expected of me as a role model,” he said. The NRL’s proposed suspension would see Mam eligible to return in Week 10 of the 2024 season.
